Almost halfway through Term 3 and we have certainly experienced some winter weather. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Parents/Carers for their continued support of our school uniform policy. It is not always easy in wet and muddy conditions to keep our students in school uniform, and I acknowledge the work parents do to maintain a high standard in this area. Our school association has recently reviewed our uniform policy and I will share the new policy in the near future. There are no changes to what constitutes our uniform just some clarification on a few items.
Our 5/6 recently attended the 5/6 Sports Expo and I would like to thank Mr Nichols and Ms Geard for their work in organising this. Some of our students have been nominated to try out for the Darwin v Devon teams, due to tight timeframes the information is not always available well in advance of these events, we will do our best to let parents know as soon as details become available.
The Department of Education has 4 values Aspiration, Respect, Courage and Growth, this term Havenview is focusing on Respect. I have shared some department information on Respect below and encourage all Parents/Carers to have a discussion with their children around Respect.
Why Respect? At DoE we respect ourselves, others, our past, our future, our environment, and we are kind. Respect provides us with a common understanding and expectation of how we relate, communicate, and treat one another. By acknowledging that other people have their own opinions and experiences we can accept and celebrate difference. Respecting each other enables us to develop trust and allows us to work collaboratively. Respect creates a safe and supportive environment so we can continually grow and develop.
Respect looks like:
- being kind, considerate, and trusting of others
- setting aside distractions, asking questions, and actively listening when communicating with others
- being inclusive and understanding difference and diversity
- providing a safe workplace where everyone’s mental and physical wellbeing is cared for
- acknowledging hard work and thanking others for outstanding contributions.

Havenview students were lucky enough to have had the opportunity to participate in the Hydro Tasmania Community Cricket Blitz on Thursday 4 August, where they enjoyed activities alongside Billy Stanlake and Julia Cavanough, between them both they have a vast amount of skill and knowledge of the game to share with our students.
Billy is a fast bowler who has represented Australia in both One Day International and Twenty 20 International Cricket, as well as Tasmania and Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash Series.
Julia is a young up and comer pace bowler who has just signed with the Tassie Tigers.
A big Thank you to Tayla Crane and Cricket Tasmania for the opportunity to be involved in the programme, a lot of fun was had by all.
Sporting Achievements at Havenview
Elenah Rankin has won the Tasmanian Statewide series of Karting on the 14 August 2022.
Elenah has been involved in Go Karting for two years, in the last twelve months has become competitive. This year she has raced the Tasmanian Statewide series, which is 4 rounds held around the state. The tracks she has raced on are Smithton, Launceston, Hobart, and Highclere. Elenah has been racing against other children from all over the state. Elenah has raced consistently over four rounds and on Sunday she started this weekend’s races on top of the leader board. After the final round at Highclere Elenah was announced the overall winner of the Statewide Series in her category. Elenah’s next goal is to compete in the Tasmania State Titles which is held in Smithton in November. This event attracts mainland competitors, and I am sure Elenah will enjoy the challenge for a podium finish.
Congratulations to Zeppelin and Jagger Barnard on making the state under12 Schools Sports Australia Championship Team. Jagger and Zeppelin are heading off to Canberra to represent the state this week. They start playing their games on Monday the 22 August and finish on Friday 26 August. Zeppelin has been named captain of the team. We as a community wish them well and if you follow School Sports Australia on Facebook you can keep up to date on how they are going. Goodluck and look forward to hearing how you went.

Public Health has advised that from Monday 27 June 2022, face masks are no longer mandatory in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres. This is because of reduced COVID-19 cases in our community.
It’s important to continue to:
- stay at home if unwell, and get tested
- practise COVID-safe behaviours such as frequent handwashing and sanitising
- be up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
Students, staff, and visitors are supported to continue to wear face masks if they choose to. Face masks are still available at our school office if you need them.
When face masks are required
If you’re a close contact, you are still required to wear a face mask indoors as per current Public Health advice.
From time-to-time our school might identify activities or situations where masks are required to be worn. We ask for your support when this happens and know that it is in the best interests of our students, staff and our school community as a whole.
Our staff will continue to wear masks when working closely with students who are vulnerable to COVID-19.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly to discuss.
For more information about COVID-19, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.

Every school day counts
Getting kids to school isn’t always easy. But being at school is the best place for our kids.
If your child is unwell, they need to stay home. But if your child is well enough to attend school, they should be at school. Every day, Monday to Friday.
Reality of missing school
Data shows us that regular school attendance is one of the best things a child can do to set them up for success. But if they don’t attend, things get harder for them.
Let’s do the maths:
- If your child misses even just one day a fortnight, that adds up to 20 days of the school year. That’s the same as missing four whole weeks of school!
- If they miss one day a week, that doubles to eight weeks of school they’ll never get back.
- Over the course of their childhood, that equals two and a half years of vital education they’ll never receive…
We mean it, every school day counts. It all adds up.
Bright futures begin at school
The data also tells us something else: the better a child’s attendance rate, the better off they’ll be. Their future will be filled with more opportunities.
School is where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most. Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships and confidence.
Good attendance habits in primary school lead to good attendance habits in high school. This will help expand your child’s options even further as they grow older.
Watch this video to see the benefits of going to school.
It’s ok if you need help
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.

Welcome to Term 3.
A reminder that being at school is the best place for our learners. COVID-safe measures continue to be implemented, so that all students can learn in class safely.
If your child is well enough to attend school, being in the physical school environment is the best place for them.
If your child needs to stay home due to illness, but is well enough to continue learning, they can access the Virtual Learning Centre via Canvas. If your child is unsure of their school username and password to access the VLC, please let us know and we can provide these to you.
For Kindergarten to Year 10 students, the VLC provides access to an online learning program where you will find lessons and activities for your child on various focus areas including Reading and Writing, Number, Science, Physical Activity and Wellbeing.
In Term 3, the VLC will no longer run daily live sessions with a teacher, rather the courses will be self-directed, and your child can complete activities of interest to them for the relevant year level.
[In Years 11 and 12, short term enrolments in Virtual Learning Tasmania courses and access to optional stand-alone VET units of competency will continue. Online tutorials for English and Mathematics will no longer be available.]
You can also access resources and ideas to support learning at home at Learning at home - The Department of Education Tasmania
Whilst we acknowledge that illness may mean students are at home for a short time, we look forward to having all our students in class with us during Term 3.
For more information about the Virtual Learning Centre and changes to program delivery, please visit the Department of Education website.
