I would like to take this opportunity to Welcome Mrs Michelle Pearce to our school community. Michelle has joined our school from an out of school position on the Teaching and Learning Team and will be supporting the 1-2 class. We are thrilled to have someone with Michelle’s experience and knowledge to support our staff and students.
On Tuesday 16 May, I had the pleasure of attending our School Association meeting and am pleased that we have our full complement of parent/community and staff members. I know the School Association has been active in welcoming new families to Havenview Primary and encourage any members of our school community to contact one of the school association members if they have suggestions or queries.
During the School Association meeting I share the 2023 School Improvement Plan. In summary, our School Improvement Plan has 2 priorities. The first Priority is Literacy - in particular, Reading and using 3 waves of reading instruction to improve student learning outcomes. The second is Inclusive Practices and to continue to develop Havenview as a trauma-informed school. This will involve developing 3 tiers of support for our students and see us continue with our work on Zones of Regulation. I look forward to updating the school community on our progress on our priorities as the year progresses.
Fingers crossed the weather is fine for our Cross-country Carnival on Monday 22 May. This will be the second Cross-country Carnival where our focus is on encouraging participation, as such classes will start in various positions around our track and complete as many laps as they can. I hope to see lots of parents/carers in attendance to encourage our students (and staff) as they complete as many laps as they can.

Prep-1 Inquiry Learning
In Prep-1 our classroom provides lots of opportunities for exploring ideas and making new discoveries.
We are working hard to become confident, positive learners as we focus on building our Maths and English understandings.
Apart from the times where we come together for specific teaching of literacy and numeracy concepts our classroom is always full of opportunities for practising and mastering new skills.
Our nature and indoor independent inquiry times give us the chance to build important skills for life like learning how to work as a team, staying focussed, experiencing failure through trial and error, building resilience, asking, and answering questions, solving problems, and learning how to self-regulate.
The children can often be found working on their own projects which allows them to practice their numeracy and literacy skills in new ways.
Inquiry learning supports the children to view themselves as thinkers, it guides them to understand the how of an answer, it strengthens their oral language and skills of communication, it promotes problem solving and gives them the tools to learn across all curriculum areas.
There are different types of Inquiry that you will see in Prep-1.
Free: where the children choose the inquiry with the adults in the room supporting the process.
Guided: where I intentionally select the inquiry with the children exploring in their own way.
Structured: where the children follow my lead, and we all do the same inquiry commonly in the curriculum areas of Science or HASS.
I hope that you enjoy hearing a little bit about Inquiry Learning and that you value our photos showing the authentic, hands-on learning that is happening in in our classroom alongside the more formal learning that takes place.

NEWS FROM GRADES 2-3
In Grade 2-3 we have been reading The Fantastic Flying books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce. We wrote as Morris when he encounters a huge, windy storm. The sky turns grey and all the letters from his book blow away….
Havenview P.S would like to thank Bridie from the RSPCA for bringing Leighland the kitten in as part of their AWARE program, Animal Wellbeing: Awareness Responsibility and Education. As stated below from the RSPCA Tasmania's website they believe education is a valuable key.
The RSPCA believe education is the key to creating lasting change. Our main aim is to help young people develop responsible and caring behaviour toward animals, preventing animal cruelty and neglect in the long-term.
That’s why RSPCA has developed a series of resources aimed at educating young people about animal welfare.
RSPCA AWARE (Animal Wellbeing: Awareness, Responsibility and Education) provides resources for educators, students and parents. These resources help young people develop knowledge, skills and understandings around improving the welfare of all animals, be they companions, farmed or wild animals.

Virtual Learning Centre update!
If your child needs to stay home due to illness, but is well enough to continue learning, they may like to access the Virtual Learning Centre via Canvas.
For Kindergarten to Year 10 students, the VLC provides access to online lessons and activities for your child on various focus areas including Reading and Writing, Number, Science, Physical Activity and Wellbeing.
Your child can complete activities of interest to them or to support catch-up learning and revision.
If your child is unsure of their Canvas username and password to access the VLC, please let us know and we can provide these to you.
You can also access resources and ideas to support learning at home at Learning at home. You can find out more about the Virtual Learning Centre on the Department for Education, Children and Young People website.
Whilst we acknowledge that illness may mean students are at home for a short time, it’s so important that our students are actively participating in their learning. We know that going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grown and connect with their friends and teachers.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
