It is almost halfway through Term 1, Week 4 and our learning community continues to hum along in a positive manner, displaying the DECYP values of Respect, Courage, Aspiration and Growth. Our Reading Groups have begun in all classrooms from Prep-6; with Teachers, Teacher Assistants and leadership planning and implementing targeted small group reading instruction that addresses student needs ‘right here, right now’ by recognising and consolidating what they already know, to extend their skills and knowledge of reading further.
The School Lunch Project has been a welcome introduction to our school. It has been great to see students trying the different meals that have been on offer. A huge thank you to Ms Maartensz, Angela Smith, Michelle Thompson and the 5/6 students who have demonstrated fine waiting skills for their work in ensuring a smooth introduction of the School Lunch Project to our school. Like anything new, we have had a few teething issues, and changes are still being made. As such, we would like to thank our staff and students for their flexibility, support and understanding.
Next week will see the Growing Up Program being run for our students. Information has been sent home previously and there will be a parent information session on Monday morning; please let the front office know if you would like to attend.
The NWPSSSA (North-West Primary State Schools Sports Association) Inter Primary carnivals is also on next week for Years 3/4 and 5/6. Congratulations to all students who have been selected to represent our school and I look forward to hearing how all attending students gave their best.
Over the last two weeks we have had representatives from AFL Tas in our school running football clinics, while next week we will host Cricket Tas clinics, which I am sure students have, and will enjoy.
A huge thank you to Mr Nichols and the 4/5/6s for their great work in getting daily PE up and running again. Daily PE will run on Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays (weather permitting) and has proven to be a great start to the day for many of our students. In fact, Ms Maartensz has been heard saying that our Daily PE program is the most effective she has seen in her teaching career – high praise indeed.
Finally, a huge thank you to all those wonderful Parents, Grandparents and Carers who attended our Meet the Teacher BBQ. It was inspiring to see so many people take the time out of their already busy days to come in, welcome our new staff and reacquaint themselves with our continuing teachers while chomping on a sausage or two.
Regards
Duncan Murfet
Principal

In Term 1, for our Science focus we are studying BUGS. So far our investigations have provided opportunity to develop our researching skills through many activities. We have compared types of sources finding out which are more reliable. Using tools and real-life food examples, we have conducted comparative investigations learning about bug adaptations. As well, we have collated lists of interesting names and concepts and through researching ‘dug deeper’ finding out what they mean.
Our projects relating to bugs have all started taking shape, and as we draw closer to mid-term we have an excursion to Romaine Park and several more engaging experiments to delve into wrapping up our Science unit.

Havenview P.S Athletics Carnival
Athletics Carnival 2023
On Monday 20 February Havenview Primary School hosted an Athletics Carnival for students in Prep to Grade 6. The weather was sunny and warm, and students were in high spirits and aspirational to do their best in the events planned for the day. In the morning students in Prep to Grade 2 cheered on the Grade 3 to 6 Students who were competing in running events, some aspiring to be selected for the upcoming North-West Primary School Sports Association Athletics Carnival in Penguin.
After recess the oval filled with students competing in novelty events and sprints. Our Grade 5 and 6 students having the opportunity to demonstrate courage by taking on leadership roles across our novelty events. Students participated in a 50m sprint, egg and spoon race, sack race, tug-of-war, bean bag darts and a water relay. Our house captains of Pine (Green) and Wattle (Yellow) houses lead our houses through some loud chanting and cheering showing support for their houses. I would like to thank the house captains and 5/6 leaders for running novelty events, Jeremy our groundsman, students, staff and some parents for helping setup and pack up, our Parent Group for cooking and serving the barbeque, and parents/carers who came along to support students on the day. A special thank you to Izzy and her mum Missy for the homemade signs for Wattle and Pine and the other decorations.
NAPLAN 2023 – YEARS 3 & 5
Testing will be between 15-27 March
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning at school. NAPLAN is one form of assessment that is used in schools, and parents may wish to discuss individual results with teachers. Testing for Years 3 & 5 students is usually conducted in Term 2. However, the testing has been moved forward this year and will be held in Term 1.
The link below will take you to a parent information brochure.
Please get in touch with the school if you have any further queries.

New Student Behaviour Management policy
Havenview Primary, along with all other Tasmanian Government schools, is committed to providing your child with a learning environment that supports them to be the best they can be. We work hard to provide safe, supportive, and inclusive environments where your child can engage positively with their learning.
To strengthen the way that schools prevent and respond to bullying, a new Policy and Procedure will be in place in Term one, 2023. The new Policy is known as the Student Behaviour Management policy. It replaces the existing Respectful Student Behaviour Policy.
The important change between the old policy and the new policy is that now all schools will have the same minimum standards for preventing and responding to bullying. The new policy also has a clear definition of what bullying is and sets clear expectations for how we support students impacted by bullying.
These changes mean that the way Havenview Primary prevents and responds to bullying will meet the same standards as all other Tasmanian Government Schools. Some schools may incorporate different programs or measures to respond to bullying, but all will have the same foundation.
For more information, see the Staying Safe in Tasmanian Government Schools parent fact sheet at https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/parents-carers/parent-fact-sheets/staying-safe/
You can also talk to your child’s teacher, or Duncan Murfet to find out more.
Havenview is very fortunate to be excepted into the School Food Matter, School Lunch Program, where every Tuesday and Friday staff and students are supplied with lunch. School Food Matters focus is 'All Tasmanian children have access to healthy everyday food choices.'
Virtual Learning Centre update!
If your child needs to stay home due to illness, but is well enough to continue learning, they may like to access the Virtual Learning Centre via Canvas.
For Kindergarten to Year 10 students, the VLC provides access to online lessons and activities for your child on various focus areas including Reading and Writing, Number, Science, Physical Activity and Wellbeing.
Your child can complete activities of interest to them or to support catch-up learning and revision.
If your child is unsure of their Canvas username and password to access the VLC, please let us know and we can provide these to you.
You can also access resources and ideas to support learning at home at Learning at home. You can find out more about the Virtual Learning Centre on the Department for Education, Children and Young People website.
Whilst we acknowledge that illness may mean students are at home for a short time, it’s so important that our students are actively participating in their learning. We know that going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grown and connect with their friends and teachers.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
