What a fortnight it has been here at Havenview Primary School. Over the last week, we have been immersed in pink – pink clothes, pink hair, pink cupcakes, popcorn and a Pink Disco – all in support of Pinktober for the McGrath Foundation. I would like to express my gratitude to our Student Council, with support from Ms Maartensz for their dedication in organising and running these events for our students. We raised an incredible $210 for the McGrath Foundation, which again shows our communities willingness to go ‘above and beyond’ for others in need.
On Tuesday this week, we also enjoyed a visit from cartoonist Jeff “Joffa” Taylor who along with showing students how to draw cartoons worked with them to increase their resilience and support their understanding of, and benefits of having a growth mindset.
Dream Big business visits are still happening this term – with our students heading to a veterinary clinic and mechanic workshop. Next week some of our students will find out more about becoming an actor. I acknowledge and thank Allison and Burnie Works for their hard work in organising these visits. I believe all students have learnt heaps about possible career pathways.
PAT testing is almost complete for our students for 2023. This is one of the important ways in which we acquire the data that will inform our planning to ensure we are meeting the learning needs of all our students. I huge thank you to all teachers for their flexibility and adaptability in timetabling this testing and to Mrs Fenton for her leadership in this area.
Friday’s Student Free Day gave our staff the opportunity to complete some important Professional Learning. We completed another session organised by DECYP with the Australian Childhood Foundation on trauma-informed practice called ‘It starts with us: Using Co-regulation to support students.’ This learning fluently led into a review of our Whole School Agreed Inclusive Practices document. We mapped how the Zones of Regulation, Berry Street Education Model and trauma informed practices all work together to address the requirements of this document. Staff also reviewed our Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey data which will be used to inform our Annual Review and 2024 School Improvement Plan.
It is hard to believe that we are now heading into Week 5 of our final term for 2023, but here we are. And as we all know, things do not slow down from here, so please keep an eye out for relevant information regarding upcoming events. It’s sure getting exciting!

On Thursday 2 November (Prep - 6) and Tuesday 7 November (Kinder), Havenview Student Council hosted a school disco to raise money for Breast Cancer awareness.
All staff and students fully immersed themselves in the pink theme, with everything from pink outfits and hair to pink treats and drinks to ensure the energy levels were up to bust out a few moves.
The days were a roaring success with everyone having a blast and in the process raising $210.00 for Breast Cancer Australia Foundation.
A big thank-you to everyone that contributed to this worthy cause.
On Wednesday 8 November we had Googababinj visit us to share his knowledge of his place, Darumbal country (Rockhampton). He told us some great stories which all had very clear lessons; whether it be how to catch fish in the dam or when not to go into the water. He also shared the way his people keep warm, keep dry, use different boomerangs for different purposes and then ... played his didgeridoo. What was extra special was he also recognised what a special place Tasmania is - he reckons we are blessed.
Our 4-5 class did an amazing job running a Remembrance Day Service on Friday 10 November, laying wreaths in honour of fallen soldiers and given thanks to present ADF personnel.
Families and carers were invited to join us as we commemorated and gave thanks.
Students have also been working hard on poppy wreaths and peoms.
Each of our classes this week experienced the talent of cartoonist Jeff 'Joffa' Taylor who helped us recognise that everyone can draw - it is simply putting different shapes together in diffferent ways. He also spoke about the importance of listening; how we only learn when our ears are open and focused on the person speaking to us. Hopefully your children come home and share the skills they learned with you, their families.
Come and join other Havenview parents and carers for a cuppa and a chat on a Wednesday mornings.
We are currently working on planning the whole school Christmas Lunch and Christmas Raffle.

Virtual Learning Centre update!
If your child needs to stay home due to illness, but is well enough to continue learning, they may like to access the Virtual Learning Centre via Canvas.
For Kindergarten to Year 10 students, the VLC provides access to online lessons and activities for your child on various focus areas including Reading and Writing, Number, Science, Physical Activity and Wellbeing.
Your child can complete activities of interest to them or to support catch-up learning and revision.
If your child is unsure of their Canvas username and password to access the VLC, please let us know and we can provide these to you.
You can also access resources and ideas to support learning at home at Learning at home. You can find out more about the Virtual Learning Centre on the Department for Education, Children and Young People website.
Whilst we acknowledge that illness may mean students are at home for a short time, it’s so important that our students are actively participating in their learning. We know that going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grown and connect with their friends and teachers.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
