Wow!
Our Christmas lunch was, yet again, a most wonderful experience - the joy of the students was evident, and no way diminished by our more spread-out setting, due to current COVID concerns. It is a huge job to cater for 120+ students. And it was through the teamwork of our parent group that it all came together so effectively – from the decorations and the individual catering requests to the timely way meals were served. Thank you to our amazing Parent Group for this – and for everything you do, as a team and individually for our school – your dedication, diligence and determination to support us in making Havenview Primary School the best it can be is so very appreciated.
The past week has seen the artistic talents of our students on display in our main corridor. If you haven’t already viewed these masterpieces, you are most welcome to do so before the end of the school year. A big thank you to Mrs Mason and her helpers for organising this.
Additionally, congratulations go out to Mrs Cobbing’s class whose Educational Research Project Expo was a fantastic forum for them to celebrate their successes and share their learning about Space with their families and the greater community. In fact, our Facebook post and photos caught the eye of Andrew Boyd, an ex-Havenview student, a volunteer STEM communicator and organiser of TastroFest who then organised to visit and chat with the students about their learning. We certainly look forward to Andrew’s continued support of our school.
Regarding, what’s to come … just a reminder that on Monday at 1:30pm, in the Multipurpose Room, we will be hosting a session on the Zones of Regulation and Restorative Practices. Nardia Broomhall, our Inclusive Practice Coach, together with our leadership team will facilitate this session. I encourage as many parents, carers and relevant community members as possible to come along to this and also to the launch of the Walk ‘n’ Talk track project. This will occur at 12:00pm on Tuesday 13December. I am certainly excited about it, and just to get you as enthusiastic about it as me, I’ve heard a rumour that Mrs Cobbing’s class are preparing something extra special for the event. I hope to see you all there in sharing with us the making of another special Havenview event.
Finally, it is unfortunate that we have a few cases of COVID again, so please in the lead up to the end of the school year, and our Christmas festivities, remember to follow COVID protocols while on site and stay at home if you’re feeling unwell.
Regards
Duncan Murfet Principal

Keeping your family safe online.
Cyber Security Awareness
Being online allows your family to learn, socialise and have fun. But it can be challenging to ensure you are all safe.
This Cyber Security Awareness Month (October), learn how to improve your digital awareness, identify scams and protect your family when online.
The Cybermarvel website is full of useful resources for parents and carers, including:
- free webinars on digital technologies and mental health
- videos on how to keep your child safe online
- podcast episodes on talking with your child about online safety
- device management tips
- plus plenty more!
This week, students from Grades 1 – 6 participated in the Think You Know Program with Senior Constable Kellie Little were she discussed all aspects of online safety.
Parents and carers play an important role in supporting their child’s online safety by understanding these risks and learning important tips and tricks to help reduce them.
Each Newsletter until the end of Term we will share a frequently asked question fact sheet.
Survey for Families: Out-of-Area Enrolments
The Department for Education, Children and Young People is reviewing the procedure for out-of-area enrolments at Tasmanian Government schools. We are interested to learn more about your perspectives on the benefits of attending your local government school, and the reasons families seek enrolment at a school outside their local intake area. You are invited to have your say using an online survey at https://forms.office.com/r/CX6hgsUvcX.

New Student Behaviour Management policy
Havenview Primary, along with all other Tasmanian Government schools, is committed to providing your child with a learning environment that supports them to be the best they can be. We work hard to provide safe, supportive, and inclusive environments where your child can engage positively with their learning.
To strengthen the way that schools prevent and respond to bullying, a new Policy and Procedure will be in place in Term one, 2023. The new Policy is known as the Student Behaviour Management policy. It replaces the existing Respectful Student Behaviour Policy.
The important change between the old policy and the new policy is that now all schools will have the same minimum standards for preventing and responding to bullying. The new policy also has a clear definition of what bullying is and sets clear expectations for how we support students impacted by bullying.
These changes mean that the way Havenview Primary prevents and responds to bullying will meet the same standards as all other Tasmanian Government Schools. Some schools may incorporate different programs or measures to respond to bullying, but all will have the same foundation.
For more information, see the Staying Safe in Tasmanian Government Schools parent fact sheet at https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/parents-carers/parent-fact-sheets/staying-safe/

Burnie Works
And that’s a wrap! Burnie City Youth Council 2022
The Burnie City Youth Council held its final meeting this morning which was followed by an end of year excursion.
Burnie City Council Deputy Mayor Giovanna Simpson is the Council’s representative for the Youth Council and said “Today is an opportunity for Youth Councillor’s to celebrate their achievements together. It has been wonderful working with such an inspirational group, I am so proud of the work these amazing young people have done this year. I would especially like to thank Youth Mayor Abbey Granger and Deputy Youth Mayor Taleah Smith for running the meetings so well.”
The Burnie Youth Council is a Special Committee of the Burnie City Council and is coordinated by Burnie Works. 27 Youth Councillors were appointed to the 2022 Youth Council.
Being a Youth Councillor provides young people with the opportunity to learn about how Local Government works, develop leadership skills, learn more about their local community and participate in a range of community projects.
Each year four students from each high school and two students from each primary school are nominated by their school to become a youth councillor. These representatives are then asked to nominate for the positions of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Junior Deputy Mayor.
Nominations have just opened for the 2023 Burnie City Youth Council. Young people are encouraged to speak with their teachers to find out how to nominate.
Burnie Works would like to thank this year’s Youth Council for all their work and ideas. It has been wonderful to watch you all grow and learn, make new friendships and contribute to the Burnie community.
The Youth Council have been working together on a message for their fellow students which they completed this morning, check it out
Burnie Works
"Thank you again to our incredible Youth Councillors and to Burnie Works for the incredible job they continue to do to support this program for our young community leaders!"
Giovanna Simpson
Congratulations to Zeppelin and Emily for being representatives for Havenview P.S at the Burnie Council for 2022, what a wonderful experience.
