We are courageous and resilient people at Havenview Primary - not even the cold and windy weather on Monday deterred our excursion to Sisters Beach on pinmatik country; rather it added to our experience. Students courageously shared their class constructed Acknowledgements of Country before we went exploring on the beach. With inquiring minds, we imagined life many thousands of years ago – what we would do and what we could use to survive. Christina (the Senior Curriculum Officer - Aboriginal Education) even shared with us how she had seen the juice of the pigface used as a medicine for a cut. I would encourage parents to take the chance when at the school to look at the wonderful displays our clever students have created in displaying the connection they made with this special place. And I also wish to express our gratitude to Christina Schleich, Charna Corona and Mrs Tammy Fenton for all their hard work preparing for this day. Thank you.
This week I would like to share some of our Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey (SWES) data. This data is from the SWES our Grade 3 – 6 students completed earlier in the year. A quick scan tells us:
- 77% and 74% of our students identify as having medium or high wellbeing around Peer and School belonging*
- our students’ wellbeing around emotional regulation has improved by 12%
- our students’ wellbeing around school climate has improved by 12%
- our students’ wellbeing around nutrition – breakfast has improved by 14%
- there was a reduction of 21% in students having low wellbeing around engagement with their schoolwork.
* As a staff we have decided that it is important to raise the number of students in our school who report high wellbeing in Peer and School Belonging. As such, this is an identified area for us to focus on in 2023.
I would like to highlight a couple of events that we have coming up in the weeks before the end of the year. On Tuesday 29 November we will be welcoming parents and carers into the school to view our school’s Art Exhibition and the 4/5 students Expo for their Educational Research Projects (ERP). On this day, we will also be holding a volunteer recognition afternoon tea at 2:00pm in the multi-purpose room.
Additionally, on Monday 12 December at 1:30pm there will be a parent information session to explain Zones of Regulation and the fundamentals of Restorative Practice, facilitated by Mrs Nardia Broomhall from the Inclusive Practices team. I encourage all parents/carers who are available at this time to attend this session – language and knowledge shared between school and home benefits all children. Please let us know you will be attending by replying to the front office by Friday 9 December.
In preparation for 2023, we are seeking expressions of interest from family members, carers and the local community who would be available to participate in one-on-one reading sessions with, initially, our Kinder students. If you are keen to help our youngest students develop a love of reading, please talk to Ms Maartensz or leave your name at the office.

On the 11th hour of the 11 day of the 11 month staff and students paid tribute to our Defence Force Personal both serving and past, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Sisters Beach Sea Country School Excursion
Explore Sea Country
Tasmanian Aboriginal people have always had and continue to have a strong cultural relationship with plants, collected both in and out of the rich waters around the coasts of Lutruwita / Tasmania. Plants in and around Sea Country are important to Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
On Monday, Havenview Primary visited Sisters Beach to explore the beach. When we arrived at Sisters Beach, we read out our Acknowledgement of Country. We explored the beach, looking at the plants and identifying what we could see and if they have a use for the Aboriginal people. Plants were used for the following purposes.
- FOODS
- MEDICINE
- TOOLBOX for building and tools
Many students found cuttle fish, seaweed and interesting shells and was curious about the purpose of these items for the Aboriginal people.
Thank you, Christina Schleich and Charna, for supporting us with this excursion, despite the weather everyone had a great time, and the excursion has sparked our inquiring minds.

Keeping your family safe online.
Cyber Security Awareness
Being online allows your family to learn, socialise and have fun. But it can be challenging to ensure you are all safe.
This Cyber Security Awareness Month (October), learn how to improve your digital awareness, identify scams and protect your family when online.
The Cybermarvel website is full of useful resources for parents and carers, including:
- free webinars on digital technologies and mental health
- videos on how to keep your child safe online
- podcast episodes on talking with your child about online safety
- device management tips
- plus plenty more!
This week, students from Grades 1 – 6 participated in the Think You Know Program with Senior Constable Kellie Little were she discussed all aspects of online safety.
Parents and carers play an important role in supporting their child’s online safety by understanding these risks and learning important tips and tricks to help reduce them.
Each Newsletter until the end of Term we will share a frequently asked question fact sheet.
Making every school day count
Welcome back to the last term of the school year! We’re excited for what’s in store, including Fire Education, EMUsicians concert, Explore Sea Country excursion, 3/4 Sports Expo, K-2 Water Awareness, Transition Days, End of Year Assemblies and much more.
This final stretch of the school year can sometimes be challenging to get your kids to school. But being at school is the best place for our kids, and it’s important we make every school day count.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
Here are some tips to help:
- Create a routine.
- Give yourself enough time in the morning.
- Be on time, every day. Monday to Friday.
- Schedule appointments and trips outside of school hours.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Set some technology boundaries.
If your child is well enough to attend school, they should be at school. Every day, Monday to Friday.
Data tells us that the better a child’s attendance rate, the better off they’ll be. Their future will be filled with more opportunities…. which is what every parent and carer wants for their child.
School is where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most. Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships and confidence.
Again, please talk to us about your situation if you’re having trouble getting your child to school every day.
