The Grade 5 Dream Big Higher Education Visit

At UTAS, we experienced technology and agriculture through cheese-tasting, the Virtual Reality Headsets, Spheros and Drones. Our favourite was the VR Headsets! We also learnt about Tasmanian Aboriginal Culture with Brendan Murray, the Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer of UTAS. Fun fact: the Earth’s heart beats once every 25 thousand years! Burnie was also once the inside of a volcano!
At Tas Tafe, we were challenged to use teamwork to build a pool noodle building that lasted 15 seconds without falling over! Afterwards, our guides took us on a tour of one of the areas nearby. We visited the electrician space as well as a space where apprentices were practicing building a roof.
Finally, we visited Hellyer College. After lunch in the library, we had some student representatives take us down to the music and arts department. Here we separated into two groups and went to music and photography. One group went and had a go playing some of the instruments and even got to listen to some of the Hellyer students play their music. It was so good but also so loud - some of our eardrums nearly burst! The other group got to tour through the art department and go through a cool door called the Tartus Door. It led us to a blackout room for photo developing. We also got to make collages as part of an activity.
Overall, we all had the best time ever, and it seems that most of us are interested in what the university has to offer. We really look forward to what the rest of Dream Big has in store.
